Downtown San Diego History
|
San Diego's Old Town is actually a state historic park. Its 20 reconstructed or restored buildings are set on 13 dusty acres centered around a town square. They'll remind you of a combination Mexican, Spanish and Old Western-style Williamsburg, although not as refined. There are costumed volunteers in abundance, who give free tours at 2 p.m. daily. There are also working shops and restaurants on either side of the museums. A pretty hacienda, built in 1829 by Juan Bandini, is today the wildly popular Mexican eatery Casa de Bandini, where the wait for a table can stretch to over an hour. Reconstructed wood frame homes on the corner of San Diego Avenue and Twiggs Street are today touristy shops, selling quilts, souvenirs and Western clothing. Around this historic core are more restaurants, galleries and shops, including the color-splashed labyrinth of Bazaar del Mundo. For many tourists, this collection of craft shops and restaurants constitutes the entire Old Town experience: Mexican folk dancers perform here on weekends, and mariachi bands play as you sip margaritas in the courtyard of Casa de Pico restaurant.
